Akon Plans To Provide Electricity To Africa

Senegalese-American singer is trying to provide electricity to about a million household in Africa by the end of the year, 2014. 

In a month, Akon - through Akon Corp., plans to start this project with two to three villages that will become equipped with solar panels that allow people to have light and electricity. The project will consist of the installation of solar equipment in households and promote their energy sufficiency

The initiative called “Akon Lighting Africa” is in partnership with Solektra International, a member of the African Development Solutions Group, together with the Non-Governmental Organization GIVE1 PROJECT. 

The singer has also met a select group of heads of states in African countries to discuss the possibility of a public-private partnership to resolve the energy issue in Africa. Akon has met with President Macky Sall of Senegal, Prime Minister Aminata Tourè of Senegal, President Alpha Condè of Republic de Guinea, President Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso, President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone, and President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon - where he discussed the initiative and plans of a tour around the African countries.
