A 9-month-old baby, on Tuesday afternoon, died as a residential three-storey
building collapsed around Challenge Bus Stop in Mushin area of Lagos State.
About eight people were also reportedly injured, while others were trapped,
before they were rescued by sympathisers who thronged the scene.
Three of
the critically-injured occupants are said to be siblings.
The
building reportedly caved in around 2.00 p.m. with some of the occupants,
including children and babies still trapped. Some of the occupants, who heard
the cracking sounds of the building, escaped and were trying to inform others
when the building finally began to fall apart.
At
the end of the rescue operation, which was later cordinated by the National
Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), eight people were rescued alive and
rushed to an unnamed hospital.
Lifeless
body of a 12-month-old baby, whose mother had managed to escape death was
however, recovered under the debris of the collapsed building.Ibrahim
Farinloye, the South-West spokesperson for NEMA, confirmed the incident to the
Nigerian Tribune, adding that a headcount after the incident indicated that
everybody had been evacuated.
