Court Orders Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Freed

The ousted leader lies in a medical bed inside a cage in a courtroom during his verdict hearing in Cairo on June 2, 2012. A judge sentenced Mubarak to life in prison for his role in ordering the killing of protesters in the 2011 uprisings.
An Egyptian court on Wednesday ordered the release of the country’s disgraced former President, Hosni Mubarak. According to Mubarak’s lawyer, Fareed el-Deeb, he could be freed from prison on Thursday.

The court ordered his release in a corruption case that was the last remaining legal grounds for his detention. “The court decided to release him,” he told reporters as he left a court in Cairo. When he was asked when he was asked when the release would be effected, he said “maybe tomorrow.”

The court ordered Mubarak's release because he has been held past the maximum time he can be detained before being convicted.

The only condition for his release is that he must remain in the country.
Egypt's General Prosecutor has said he will not appeal to keep Mubarak in custody, state media reported, clearing the way for him to be released.
