Today Tuesday, February 4, 2013, marks the 10th anniversary of the biggest social networking website in the world, Facebook.
From a university directory formulated in a Harvard dormitory by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, to a billion-dollar business, Facebook has become a way of life for its users, altering the way we use the internet and conduct relationships.

Billionaires' club
Facebook has made billionaires of
Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin and Sean Parker.
On Forbes 2013 list of the
wealthiest Americans, 29-year-old Zuckerberg was ranked 20, with an estimated
net worth of $19 billion. Moskovitz’s wealth totalled at $5.2 billion – born
nine days after Zuckerberg, he’s also the world’s youngest billionaire – Saverin’s fortune equated to $2.2 billion,
while erstwhile Facebook president and Napster co-founder Parker has a worth of
$2 billion.
Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating
officer at Facebook since March 2008, has also been minted by the company,
becoming a billionaire thanks to the growth of the company’s stock.
Acquisitions
Today, Facebook isn’t just Facebook.
Back in April 2012, the social networking giant acquired burgeoning photo and
video sharing site Instagram for around $1 billion.
In 2013, the popularity of the
service that started life in 2010 continued to increase rapidly, showing a 23%
growth in active users.
Facebook doesn’t have it all its own
way when it comes to purchases though. In November 2013, increasingly popular
photo messaging app Snapchat – much like Instagram 19 months earlier - caught
the eye of Facebook, who offered $3 billion to buy the company. However, CEO
and founder Evan Spiegel declined, wishing to progress the business himself.
Population
According to recent calculations,
Facebook currently has 1.23 billion monthly active users – that’s approximately
one-sixth of the world’s population. If the site was a country, it would be the
second largest in the world behind China (1.36 billion) and India (1.239
billion). That’s bigger than the next four populations - US, Indonesia, Brazil,
Pakistan and Nigeria - combined.
